Background
My name is Sébastien Bernaz. My career hasn’t followed a straight line — it has been built through successive reinventions, driven by the same curiosity for what’s new and the ability to teach myself.
A self-taught start on blogs
It all begins in 2005, as a teenager, on blogging platforms. Two of them, among several, find real success between 2005 and 2009 — one reaches the platform’s top 100 — and together draw half a million unique visitors. HTML and CSS come quickly — the same principle as BBCode, already practised for years on those blogs — then PHP, on a first dynamic site. No one taught me any of it: I learned by doing, on projects I chose myself.
That period also taught me what can be questionable about the web: growth mechanisms built on pyramid schemes, an audience bought more than earned. The experience gives a first-hand measure of it, and reasons to leave it behind — an early step, without knowing it yet, toward what would later become a requirement: designing digital services responsibly rather than at any cost.
A path through agencies and services companies
I built websites and web applications for several agencies, then joined a mutual insurer as an operations analyst and later a production engineer: daily operations, industrialisation, job scheduling, disaster recovery plans, SEPA and DSN regulatory compliance. The gap between development and operations is not really a gap — it is the same question asked from both ends: how do you ship something that keeps working, for a long time, without having to think about it every day.
The five years that followed, in services companies, shifted that question toward delivery — projects first, in demanding environments such as telecom and banking, then an internal product dedicated to responsible digital practice, carried as Product Owner through to maturity.
What interests me today
I pay particular attention to digital sobriety. It has been my work since 2023: eco-design assessments, coaching development teams, putting tracking indicators in place. This site’s eco-design statement is the direct demonstration — it is measured with the same tools and followed on the same indicators as the projects I support.
I am also closely interested in emerging technologies: the professional uses of generative and agentic AI, which I have trained in (Claude Academy) and fold into my development practice, including the design of this very site; and blockchain, whose workings I have studied and practised for several years, for what it can bring to a more transparent and more responsible digital world.
What drives me today isn’t whether I’m available, but the wish to keep building: more projects, more products, with AI and digital sustainability as design requirements. The contact page remains the most direct way in.
